One of the most beloved figures in Malayalam cinema is Dr. Sunny from the psychological thriller Manichitrathazhu a man who, through calm scientific reasoning, unravelled the deepest mysteries of fear, superstition, and the hidden corridors of the human mind. He made psychology visible and meaningful to an entire generation of Malayalis. That character belongs to the world of cinema. But real life, it turns out, has produced its own version of that story  and it is, in many ways, far more remarkable.

Her passion for the science of the mind is not confined to lecture halls or consulting rooms. It is a personal calling that she carries with her everywhere. In 2007, Dr. Jesna founded Pratyasha Counselling Centre in Kerala, which has since grown into one of the state’s most respected and innovative mental health institutions. Alongside it she established Pratyasha College of Mind Management, creating an integrated ecosystem of clinical care, education, and professional training. SERVING THE BRITISH PUBLIC AND TRAINING ITS PROFESSIONALS

In the United Kingdom, Dr. Jesna works as a Senior Educational Psychologist, conducting statutory assessments, therapeutic interventions, and school-based consultations with children, families, and educational institutions. As a government panel body member, she contributes to the shaping of professional standards and policy in a country not her own a measure of the esteem in which she is held by her peers and institutions alike. She has provided specialist training to English professionals teachers, head teachers, parents, and practitioners in the areas of emotional literacy, trauma informed therapeutic practice, and psychological support for children and young people with special educational needs.

Her influence reaches into some of the most prominent and powerful circles in British public life. She has provided confidential psychological consultation to celebrities, Members of Parliament, MLAs, and senior public figures in both the United Kingdom and India individuals who carry the weight of public responsibility and who require the kind of discreet, expert support that Dr. Jesna provides without fanfare. “She has provided expert guidance to parliamentarians, celebrities, and public figures always quietly, always without seeking recognition.”

WHEN CRISIS CALLED THE PANDEMIC AND BEYOND

When the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill, Dr. Jesna mobilised. Working in official collaboration with the District Collector’s office in Kerala a partnership that became one of the most significant mental health responses in the region she coordinated a network of more than 400 psychologists and counsellors to deliver free telephonic counselling to the public, available around the clock, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in five languages. This was not a small initiative; it was a public health intervention of genuine scale and ambition, reaching thousands of people at their most vulnerable.

Simultaneously, in the United Kingdom, she provided dedicated psychological support to NHS nurses the healthcare workers who bore the heaviest burden of the pandemic, often doing so without adequate emotional support for themselves. Dr. Jesna understood what many systems were slow to recognise: that those who care for others must themselves be cared for. She also delivered psychological training to government officials managing the public crisis response, equipping them with the tools to lead effectively under conditions of extreme uncertainty. During this same period, her Mind Power Training programme reached 250 business leaders helping them not merely to survive the economic disruption of the pandemic, but to find strategic clarity and grow their enterprises even as the world contracted around them.

Dr. Jesna’s record of service in disaster and crisis extends further still. During the devastating floods that struck Kerala, she delivered Mind Power Training to more than 1,500 young people at a mega camp in Munnar helping an entire generation begin the work of rebuilding their inner resilience in the aftermath of catastrophe.

PUBLIC SERVICE ACROSS KERALA

Long before her international career took shape, Dr. Jesna was already building a reputation for tireless public service. As part of the Government of Kerala’s Nirbhaya Project, she worked as a psychologist supporting vulnerable children and young people. She has conducted more than 1,000 training sessions, school programmes, and community workshops across Kerala, bringing psychological literacy and mental health awareness to students, families, and educators throughout the state. She played a key role in establishing the Kerala Psychological Welfare Association, serving as its inaugural Secretary a contribution that helped lay the institutional foundations for organised psychological advocacy in Kerala.

KELKKAM- A VOICE ACROSS EVERY BORDER

For Malayalis scattered across the world navigating foreign systems, distant from family, and often struggling in silence with the particular grief of migration Dr. Jesna created Kelkkam. The name means ‘to listen,’ and that simplicity captures the initiative’s profound purpose. What began as a UK-based mental health support project has grown into a globally reaching movement, today coordinating more than 4,000 psychologists, counsellors, and mental health professionals to provide free counselling services to Malayali migrants across the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, and beyond all in their mother tongue, removing the linguistic and cultural barriers that so often prevent diaspora communities from seeking help.

The project carries the patronage of some of Kerala’s most respected and beloved public figures: Fr. Davis Chiramel, Justice Kurian Joseph, Santhosh George Kulangara, and the legendary magician Gopinath Muthukad. Under their support, Kelkkam has become more than a service. It is a statement of collective responsibility a reminder that a community’s wellbeing does not end at a geographical border.

A LIFE THAT EDUCATES THE WORLD

Beyond her clinical, institutional, and crisis work, Dr. Jesna is a prolific educator and communicator. She delivers regular webinars and workshops for audiences spanning the globe, reaching parents, teachers, students, and professionals across continents. Through her social media platforms, she makes psychological knowledge accessible to a Malayalam speaking public that is hungry for it translating complex science into the language of everyday experience. She is, in the truest sense, a psychologist without walls.

In 2026, she was recognised as one of the Most Influential Psychologists in the United Kingdom a distinction that reflects not only her clinical expertise but the breadth and depth of a career dedicated entirely to the service of others. She has received numerous awards and honours over the course of her professional journey, each one a marker on a path that has never been motivated by personal recognition.

From Puthur, Thrissur, to the institutions and communities of Britain; from the banks of the Periyar to the corridors of the British Psychological Society the journey of Dr. Jesna Thottiyan Johny is not simply the story of a career built with brilliance and determination. It is the story of what one person, fuelled by passion and guided by conscience, can offer to the world. For anyone who wishes to understand what it means to practise psychology as a vocation rather than a profession, Dr. Jesna’s life is both a lesson and an inspiration.

“From a small village in Kerala to the global stage — a life that proves talent, dedication, and service can take a person anywhere.”
