Former women Maoists from Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region turned heads by walking the ramp at a National Handloom Day event in Raipur, marking a remarkable new chapter in their lives.
When people hear the word “Maoist,” images of armed insurgents living in remote forests often come to mind. But for many former Maoists, surrendering has marked the beginning of a very different chapter—one focused on rebuilding their lives and reconnecting with mainstream society.
A powerful glimpse of this transformation was seen in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, during a National Handloom Day 2026 event, where former women Maoists from Bastar confidently walked the ramp in traditional Chhattisgarhi handloom attire. Draped in elegant Kosa silk and other handwoven creations, they received warm applause at the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium while showcasing the rich textile traditions of the region.
The event was more than a fashion show. It became a symbol of rehabilitation, empowerment and fresh beginnings, highlighting how women who once lived amid conflict are now finding new opportunities in civilian life. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai interacted with the participants and extended his best wishes for their new journeys. 
Their presence on the runway reflected a remarkable transition from conflict to community, and from uncertainty to opportunity. Today, many former Maoists are pursuing new careers, working with organisations, taking part in social initiatives and building futures that once seemed out of reach.
